Summer Staff Excited to Return!

Over half of the Camp Allegheny staff is coming back this year, and we have some new folks to add to our staff family! We are always excited to get staff back, and they are excited to come back!

When asked about how she felt about coming back, Emily replied, "How many ways can you say, I'm just PSYCHED?! Working at camp was fabulous. I cannot wait to reconnect with campers and fellow staff, build new relationships, and grow in the Lord!"

Brian said, "I'm really loooking forward to working and getting to know everyone better from last year and for meeting new people this year. Im also excited to come back to camp for more of those ice cream cookie deserts, s'mores, and mountain pies!"

"I'm so excited about getting to see all my campers from previous years and hear about all the cool things God has been doing in their lives," says  Sara, "I love coming back to camp because even though I've been there a thousand times I can still learn something new.  It could be something like horse back riding or climbing or it could be learning something new about myself or God.  It's a great place to learn about God's love and have a lot of fun."

The staff are excited to see you all again! I hope you are excited to come back and reconnect with them!

There's Always Something New!

Camp Allegheny is always trying to add to our events, improve upon our activities, and simply offer more to our campers! Last year was a year with a ton of new programs and activities. Our all new Christian Wrangler program included a Trail course, National Certification, and a new focus on faith. Our adventure and H2O events had an entirely new activity in Whitewater Tubing on the Stonycreek River, and it was a blast! New activities during our horseshow including a Bucking Barrel and our dunk-tank-like Flusher were enjoyed by all of our events. Our adventure camps enjoyed a new climbing location, too! These are only a few of the changes we made in 2008.

Of course, 2009 is shaping up to be another awesome year of new, cool, and exciting activities. Our Christian Wrangler program will include new obstacles on our Trail Course and new Trail Rides. All events will be able to enjoy a bunch of new activities at the horseshow like sack races and watergun quickdraw contests. Our group challenge ropes course will include 3 entirely new elements, and, no, I'm not gonna tell you what they are! They are a lot more fun if you learn about them as you go! Camp Allegheny is also looking to have new Kayaks and even a new sailboat for our Ultimate H2O and Sailing events!

There are a lot more new and exciting activities in the works, too. You'll just have to wait and see when you get here all of the great changes we are making!

We Welcome Tom Robertson to our Full-Time Staff!

Camp Allegheny's year round staff is really a family. We are brothers and sisters in the Lord striving to provide our guests and campers a place to have fun, get away from the daily grind, and get connected with God. It is a big deal for us when we have the opportunity to welcome a new member into the family.

As such, it is with gladness we would like everyone to know that Tom Robertson is our newest full-time staff member. He has stepped in to fill the shoes of Bruce Scott who retired as our Maintenance Assistant. Praise the Lord for a growing family!

Mission Work Projects - Closer to Home

It is true that in tough economic times we must depend on God to provide for our needs. We are called to cooperate with him in that provision by making good decisions with what he gives us. Camp Allegheny offers a mission opportunity for your youth (12+ y/o) or adult church group that requires no economic commitment save travel! If your group is willing to give at least 8 hours of their day on Saturday, they get to stay for the whole weekend absolutely free. If you'd rather give only 4 hours of your day, you can stay for half price ($39).

Here are a few of the projects your work group could do (specific projects will be given based on your group make up and ability):

  • Pole Building at Maintenance Garage
  • Landscaping around Lodges
  • Clean & Restain Lodges
  • Spring Woods Clean Up
  • Hemlock Lodge - Roof, Bathroom, Basement Walls & Ceiling
  • Rebuild Firepits - benches, fire rings, etc.
  • Cut, split, and stack firewood (this is ongoing, simple and a TON of help for us!)

Call our office at (814) 754-5122 and we can help you organize your work retreat!

Good Eatin'

Jesus said to Thomas, “Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe! …. You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” (John 20:27, 29)

When the risen Christ first appeared to his disciples in the flesh, Thomas wasn’t present. He adamantly refused to believe unless he could touch Jesus’ wounds. We, too, often waver and demand evidence to support our unsteady faith. But God assures us that all the proof and answers we need are available in his holy and unchanging Word, the Bible. MUSICSPOTLIGHT

Mainstream Artist

Background: This Denver-based alternative-rock band consisting of former schoolmates formed in 2002. The group, best known for its song “How to Save a Life,” has a Grammy nomination.Soon after the band’s self-titled second album released in February, it knocked Bruce Springsteen from the number-one spot on the Billboard charts.

Albums: The Fray (2009), How to Save a Life (2005)

What Parents Should Know: The Fray’s piano- rock songs feature moody, minor-key melodies and introspective lyrics. “You Found Me” is about an imagined encounter with God. The band’s songs have received some airplay on Christian radio.

What The Fray Says: Frontman Isaac Slade says, “I have a lot of baggage with [God], and the things I’d like to say to him aren’t totally nice. It’s like, ‘Where were you?’ … If I’m going to be a believer…then I need to have some answers…. Help me make sense of this.”

Discussion Questions: If you could meet God, what would you want to say to him (both positive and negative)? What questions do you have for God? To have faith, how much clarity or understanding do you need first, and why?

Christian Artist

Background: This alternative-rock band from Cincinnati formed in 2004. With some friends, brothers Aaron and Ryan Morgan hastily recorded three songs in Aaron’s bedroom to meet a “Battle of the Bands” deadline. They placed second, and Seabird was formed. Seabird’s songs have been featured on TV shows such as Pushing Daisies, Numb3rs, and Grey’s Anatomy.

Albums: ’Til We See the Shore (2008)

What Parents Should Know: Seabird’s British-influenced sound has been compared to Coldplay, Ben Folds Five, and The Fray. Lyrically, the band moves beyond Christian clichés to address tough topics such as loss, doubt, and relationships.

What Seabird Says: About the song “Rescue,” frontman Aaron Morgan says, “I felt like everything good I was trying to do was ending up in failure and only God could turn it into something beautiful and life-giving... I know many times in my life I’ve felt like I’ve had no way out.”

Discussion Questions: Read Psalm 72:12-14. Why do we need God’s help so often? Think of a time God came to your rescue: How did he help you, and who or what did he use? What are some ways God has transformed your life and your faith?
