Camp Allegheny Discovery Camper Acquires New Hobby

Camp Allegheny’s annual Discovery Camp for mentally handicapped adults is a popular event and was held during the same week as Bass Fishing Camp this year, from June 10, 2007 through June 16, 2007.

When a returning discovery camper, Terry Ranieri, arrived at camp on Sunday, Ben Tawney, a Camp Allegheny Staff member, noticed that he knew the names and uses of many fishing lures on a nearby display table.  When Ben asked if he went fishing frequently, he was told no and that Terry learned these things from the internet and television.

Throughout the week, Terry interacted with the bass fishing campers quite a bit, encouraging them and inquiring about their catches.  The young fishermen got to know Terry very well and with the help of some camp staff members, came up with an idea to take him fishing on their last day on the lake.

Friday, June 9, 2007, was a memorable day for Terry Ranieri, the bass fishing campers, and Camp Allegheny staff members who were present on Indian Lake.  Terry caught three bass and was completely delighted with each one.  His fishing experience is something that everyone involved will never forget.

Camp Allegheny Dance Campers Show Off Their Talents

From Sunday, June 17, 2007 to Saturday, June 23, 2007, Camp Allegheny held their second annual week of Dance Camp.  Deaned by Holly Newell, the seven dance campers received instruction for three hours each morning, Monday through Friday, as well as an afternoon session on Thursday.  This class was led by a local worship group called Tapestry of Praise who not only taught a new style of dancing, but also led a discussion on glorifying God with the gift of dance.

The campers showcased their talents for their parents, relatives, and friends on Saturday morning at a performance in Camp Allegheny’s Camp Center at 9:00 am.  They performed routines using ribbons and dowel rods and danced in both lyrical and jazz styles.  Choreography was credited to the campers, their dance instructor for the week, and Tapestry of Praise.  In all, the campers learned five dances to perform at the end-of-week show.

Camp Allegheny’s staff and the campers’ families are extremely proud of the hard work that the dancers put in throughout their week at camp, and hope to see all of them return next summer to improve their dancing skills and enjoy many other exciting activities at Camp Allegheny!
